1X Technologies is a Norwegian-American robotics and AI company building [NEO](/models/neo), a bipedal humanoid robot designed for household use. Founded in 2014 as Halodi Robotics by Bernt Øivind Børnich, the company rebranded in 2022 and shifted focus from industrial humanoids to home robots. Backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund, 1X opened NEO pre-orders in October 2025 at $20,000 with a planned $499/month subscription, though WSJ testing found early units were fully teleoperated by human operators rather than autonomous.
