What the Embodied Moxie knows about you

Moxie is a child-focused AI companion robot developed by Embodied Inc of Pasadena, California, designed to support social-emotional learning in children ages 5 to 10. The robot includes a front camera, microphones, and continuous audio and video recording transmitted to the cloud; biometric facial expression datapoints are collected and processed via cloud AI. Natural language responses are generated using Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, OpenAI, and Anthropic language models, filtered by Embodied before playback. The robot becomes inoperable if parents revoke data consent. Sold at approximately $799 before Embodied wound down operations in late 2023; the product has been discontinued.

What it collects about you

The data this device picks up.

Recording you

Moxie continuously records video and audio of children through its camera and microphones. Anyone in range, not just the child, may be captured. The robot stops working entirely if parents revoke consent for data collection.

Your body data

Moxie collects facial expression data and face images that may count as biometric data under some laws. Biometric data is deleted when its purpose is met or within one year of that purpose expiring.

Your location

Moxie collects geolocation data including latitude and longitude via the robot and derives approximate location from IP address; the robot also collects data about whether and where other objects or persons may be located in a room through its camera.

Where your data goes

Who else can see it once it leaves the device.

Shared with others

Children's voice recordings go to Google Cloud for transcription. When Moxie cannot generate a response on its own, the transcript goes to OpenAI or Anthropic. Moxie filters the AI's response before speaking it to the child.

Training their AI

Moxie tracks health data including activity summaries, emotional states, and developmental progress. Aggregated and anonymized versions of this data are not deleted even when you deactivate or delete the parent account.

What you can control

Your say over the data it holds.

How long they keep it

Moxie retains personal data no longer than reasonably necessary to fulfill collection purposes; biometric data including faceprints and voiceprints is destroyed when the initial purpose is satisfied or within 1 year of the purpose expiring, whichever comes first.

Deleting your data

Parents can modify or delete their child's personal data through the Privacy Settings in the mobile application; parents may also revoke consent at any time, though doing so renders the Moxie robot inoperable since it cannot function without audio and video processing.
