Verdict

Among commercial delivery drones with actual paid flights in the air, Zipline has the longest operational range. The company's Platform 1 (the "Sparrow") is a fixed-wing aircraft with a published service range of roughly 160 kilometers (about 100 miles) round-trip from a distribution center, and Zipline says it has flown more than 100 million commercial delivery miles across its network as of March 2025 (per Zipline's own milestone announcement covered by DroneLife). Nothing else in the same commercial delivery category has both a longer per-mission distance and a live, revenue-generating flight record you can point to.

The nuances matter, and there are several credible contenders that beat the Sparrow on a single spec-sheet line but lose once you require the flights to actually be happening on a schedule. Here is the ranked field.


The winner: Zipline Platform 1 (Sparrow)

Zipline's original fixed-wing Zip is built around one job: deliver a small payload (about 1.75 kg / roughly 4 lb) very far, very fast, from a hub. The company designed the aircraft for a 160 km round-trip service range, which is what makes a single hub in a country like Rwanda or Ghana able to reach hundreds of clinics without a truck.

The Sparrow launches from a catapult, cruises at roughly 100 km/h, drops the package by parachute, and returns to base. There is no landing pad at the destination, which is the trick that unlocks the range: the plane never has to descend, hover, and climb back out.

That range figure is not a marketing number attached to a prototype. Zipline crossed 100 million cumulative commercial delivery miles in March 2025, a milestone the company disclosed and third-party trade press (DroneLife) covered at the time. The fleet has been operating in Rwanda since 2016 and expanded into Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Japan, and multiple US pilot markets.

That is what "operational range" means: not a spec-sheet ceiling, but a distance that gets flown, in traffic, with a paying customer at the other end, thousands of times a day.

The one honest caveat: the Sparrow's payload is small (about 4 lb) and its delivery mode is parachute-drop only. If you need to hand a heavier or fragile package to a person, the Sparrow is not the right aircraft. That is exactly why Zipline built the Platform 2.


Runner-up 1: Wingcopter 198

Germany's Wingcopter Wingcopter 198 is a tilt-rotor eVTOL that, on paper, claims a longer single-flight maximum range than the Zipline Sparrow. Per Wingcopter's own spec sheet, the aircraft has a maximum range of about 110 km unloaded, 95 km with a 1 kg payload, 85 km with 3 kg, and 75 km with a 5 kg payload. Maximum takeoff weight is 25 kg, cruise speed is about 145 km/h, and payload capacity is up to 6 kg (single package) or three packages via a triple-drop system.

So why is it a runner-up rather than the winner? Two reasons. First, that ~110 km number is one-way, unloaded, in ideal conditions; the payload-carrying operational range is meaningfully shorter than the Sparrow's real-world round-trip service radius. Second, the Wingcopter 198 in Malawi and other current sites are still at pilot maturity, not the multi-country revenue-flying scale Zipline runs. In February 2025, Wingcopter also announced an expansion into long-range LiDAR surveying (per DroneLife), which is the more natural fit for a longer-endurance tilt-rotor: fly a big grid, come back, land vertically. The aircraft is real and the range spec is credible, it just does not (yet) have the flight-hour ledger the Sparrow does.


Runner-up 2: Zipline Platform 2 (P2 Zip)

The newer Zipline P2 is the platform Zipline built to solve the Sparrow's precision-delivery gap: it hovers, lowers an autonomous "droid" on a tether, and places the package quietly onto a customer's front step. Payload is up to 8 lb (about 3.6 kg), speed is about 70 mph. Zipline's own materials describe a 10-mile service radius for the standard hub-and-spoke operation, with dock-to-dock hops of up to 24 miles when Zips relay between charging docks.

So the P2 is a shorter-range aircraft than the P1: better placement, lower payload ceiling on each hop, but the range crown stays with the fixed-wing Sparrow. This is the classic hover-vs-cruise tradeoff. If you want a package placed on a porch, you need a hover; hovering burns energy fast, so range drops.


Runner-up 3: Matternet M2

Matternet's M2 is a quadrotor built for short, precise, urban hospital-and-clinic flights, and it is the platform behind live medical logistics networks (Zurich, Berlin, and the UPS Flight Forward FAA Part 135 operation in the US). Per Matternet, the M2 has a range of about 20 km with a 2 kg payload. The value proposition is not range; it is a certified operational envelope in dense airspace with a repeatable landing on a specific pad. That is a very different product from Zipline's fixed-wing hub-and-spoke. Listed here so nobody thinks Matternet was overlooked: it is a shorter-range aircraft by design.


Runner-up 4: Flytrex Sky2

Flytrex's Sky2 supports on-demand suburban food and retail delivery in Texas, North Carolina, and Florida. Flytrex's published operational envelope is roughly a 5-mile radius from each station. Again, the design point is fast, dense urban delivery, not long single-hop range.


What beats it but does not count, and why

Several drones will happily out-fly the Sparrow on a spec sheet. They do not appear on this list, because the question is about drones you can point to as operating commercial products with real deployments, not military UAVs or research aircraft.

Long-endurance military ISR aircraft (Reaper, Global Hawk, Bayraktar TB2). These fly for hours over hundreds or thousands of miles. They are not commercial delivery or enterprise drones, are export-controlled, and are not what a reader searching "longest range drone" is looking for.

Cargo eVTOL aircraft still in flight testing. Elroy Air's Chaparral, Pyka's Pelican Cargo, Sabrewing's Rhaegal, and others advertise ranges of 200 to 300 miles with hundreds of pounds of payload. As of mid-2026, none has crossed into sustained paid commercial cargo operations at anything like Zipline's scale, and several remain in flight test or early demonstration. The claimed numbers are real engineering targets, they just do not settle the "which drone actually has the longest range" question yet. (Pyka's Pelican Spray agricultural variant is in service, but that is a spray-plane job over a field, not a long-range delivery.)

Skydio X10D long-range variants. Skydio's X10D is the defense variant of the X10, adopted by the US Army, the US Air Force, and forces in Ukraine and the Philippines. It ships with an optional multiband radio that trades bandwidth for reach in the lower frequency bands, plus NightSense and no geofencing. But the X10D is a short-range tactical quadcopter: Skydio's spec sheet lists a 40-minute maximum flight time and 35-minute maximum hover, both in ideal lab conditions. Multiband radio range is a communications-link improvement, not a range-of-flight improvement. This aircraft is the leader in autonomous obstacle avoidance and GPS-denied navigation; it is not the leader in range and does not pretend to be.

High-altitude solar drones and pseudo-satellites (Airbus Zephyr, BAE PHASA-35). Multi-day flight times, but they are stratospheric ISR platforms, not commercial drones a customer buys or contracts. Same disqualification as the military ISR class.


Gotchas and caveats

"Range" is not one number. It is at least four: (a) maximum ferry range unloaded in ideal wind, (b) maximum one-way range with the design payload, (c) round-trip mission range, and (d) operational service radius (which factors reserves, weather margin, and return-to-base). Manufacturers pick the flattering one. When you see "the Wingcopter 198 flies 68 miles," that is (b); when you see "the Zipline Sparrow serves a 100-mile round-trip," that is (c) or (d). Compare like to like.

Battery vs combustion changes the whole conversation. Fixed-wing aircraft with efficient cruise (Zipline P1) and tilt-rotors that transition to horizontal flight (Wingcopter 198) fly much farther per battery pack than quadrotors that must hover the entire flight (Matternet M2, Flytrex, Skydio). If someone shows you a "long range" quadrotor, ask how much of the range budget is hover.

Regulatory range often binds before physical range does. Under current FAA rules, most commercial drone operations happen inside visual line of sight (VLOS), roughly a mile or two. Beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) waivers are what let Zipline, Wingcopter, Matternet, and Flytrex fly farther, and those waivers are aircraft- and route-specific. A drone's spec-sheet range is only unlocked in jurisdictions where the operator has a matching approval. The FAA's proposed Part 108 BVLOS rule, when finalized, is expected to standardize this; today it is still per-operator.

"Demonstrated" is not "operational." A one-off record flight (there have been battery-swap and hydrogen demonstrations reaching several hundred kilometers) is not the same thing as a commercial service that flies that distance every day. This page ranks on operational reality first, spec-sheet second, one-off demos not at all.

Payload changes everything. Wingcopter's 110 km unloaded drops to 75 km with a 5 kg payload. Cargo eVTOLs claiming 200 to 300 miles are quoting numbers with payload budgeted. Never compare a "max range" against a "max range with cargo."

Bottom line: on the current commercial map, the Zipline Sparrow has both the longest per-mission distance among aircraft that are actually flying paying deliveries at scale and, by a wide margin, the longest cumulative record of doing it. The Wingcopter 198 has a real claim to the longer single-flight spec if that is the number you care about. Everything else beats one or the other on paper and loses on flights-in-the-air.
