The answer: DJI Neo, $199 list, $139 street
If you draw the line at "a real drone that shoots stabilized 4K, tracks a subject on its own, and comes from a maker whose products still work six months in", the cheapest option in August 2026 is the DJI Neo. It launched at a $199 MSRP in September 2024 and has been dropped as low as $139 to $149 at major US retailers through 2026, which DroneDJ called "the cheapest DJI drone ever" (DroneDJ, Feb 2026; DroneDJ, June 2026).
At that price you get a 135 g palm-launched flyer that shoots 4K/30 with electronic stabilization, holds a subject in frame using onboard vision, and, critically, does not require a controller or a phone to fly the basic follow modes. The Fly More Combo (extra batteries, RC-N3 controller, charging hub) sits at $199 in the same period, down from $289 (Digital Camera World). Under 249 g means no US recreational FAA registration under Part 107 hobbyist rules.
That combination (real camera, real autonomy, real brand, sub-$200) is what disqualifies almost everything cheaper. The rest of this page walks through why.
What "real drone" means here
The market is polluted by two categories that hide the answer:
- Sub-$100 Amazon toys with VGA cameras, no GPS, no return-to-home, and battery lives measured in a single charge cycle before the cell puffs.
- FPV racing frames you assemble, which are cheap in components but demand goggles, radios, and a solder iron before they fly.
For this page, a "drone you can buy" means: comes assembled, has a stabilized camera you would actually keep footage from, has some form of autonomous flight (position hold at minimum, subject tracking preferred), and is sold by a company that still ships spare parts. MSRP is $299 on the DJI USA store, and it dropped to $209 in March 2026 at major retailers (TheNewCamera, March 2026).
Why it is the runner-up rather than the winner: it costs $60 more than the Neo at street prices, and its "autonomy" is really just GPS position hold plus return-to-home. The Neo's palm-launch follow modes are meaningfully more automated. If you want a controller and long-range transmission, though, the Mini 4K is the better $200-class buy.
3. HoverAir X1, $299 MSRP, combo bundles around $210 to $339
Zero Zero Robotics' HoverAir X1 is the closest competitor to the Neo in the "no controller, tracks you, folds into a pocket" niche. Base price is $299 on the official HoverAir US store, with combo bundles as low as $210.82 on some retailer listings (DealNews). It shoots 2.7K HDR (not 4K on the base X1), weighs 125 g, and has enclosed prop guards that make it safer to catch by hand than the Neo.
Why it does not win: the base X1 is 2.7K, not 4K, and its list price is $100 above the Neo's. The Pro and ProMax versions (HoverAir US) push into the $500 to $700 range and stop being budget picks.
4. Ryze Tello, ~$99
The Tello is the perennial "cheapest real drone" answer on Reddit threads. It is technically real: 80 g, 720p HD camera (not 4K), no gimbal, positional stability from downward vision sensors, and a genuine SDK. It is powered by a DJI flight controller and Intel processor.
Why it is not the winner even though it is cheaper: 720p with no stabilization means the footage is not what most people would keep, and there is no GPS or return-to-home. It is a coding toy and a first-drone-for-a-kid, not a camera drone. If the goal is "cheap flying camera I would post from", the Neo at ~$50 more is a different class of product.
5. Autel EVO Nano+, $549 MSRP
Autel Robotics is the main non-DJI budget option and matters more in the US given ongoing DJI import scrutiny. The Autel EVO Lite+ is the step-up; the Nano+ is the sub-249 g budget model. Base MSRP is $549 on Autel's official store, with bundle configurations at $679 to $799.
Why it is a runner-up rather than a winner: it is nearly three times the Neo's street price. What you get for that premium is a 1/1.28" 50 MP sensor (physically much larger than the Neo's), three-way obstacle avoidance, and no Chinese-manufacturer regulatory overhang in the same way DJI has. If DJI's US future worries you, the Nano+ is the cheapest non-DJI answer, but it is not "the cheapest drone".
6. Used Skydio 2+, ~$300 to $500 street
Skydio built the best consumer-tracking drone ever made (the 2+), then killed the consumer line in August 2023 to focus on the enterprise and defense Skydio X10 at ~$14,000. A used Skydio 2+ on the secondary market runs $300 to $500 depending on kit.
Why it does not count as the winner: you cannot buy one new, and Skydio has stopped supporting the consumer app for new registrations. Buying one in 2026 means depending on a discontinued product. As a "used" answer, it is unmatched at obstacle-avoidance tracking, but the "cheapest drone you can buy new" answer excludes it.
What "beats" the Neo but doesn't count
Every ranking of cheap drones on Amazon and YouTube pushes something under $100. Here is why none of them win:
The $49 to $79 Amazon toys (Holy Stone HS110D, Potensic A20, DEERC D20, and their rotating white-label cousins) advertise 1080p or 4K in the listing, but the sensor is usually a 2 MP CMOS interpolated up, mounted rigidly with no gimbal. Real 4K on a $60 drone would cost more than $60 in the sensor alone. They fly, they crash, they don't track anything. They are the reason "not toys" is in the question.
The Ryze Tello at $99 is the honest edge case. It is a real drone in the engineering sense: real flight controller, real SDK, real position hold from downward vision sensors. It fails the "camera drone" filter on video quality (720p unstabilized) and the "autonomous" filter on navigation (no GPS, no return-to-home, no subject follow). It is the winner if the question is "cheapest real drone for learning to code flight". It is not the winner if the question is "cheapest flying camera".
A used Mavic Mini or Mini 2 on eBay runs $150 to $250 depending on condition. If you are comfortable with used consumer electronics and the seller's word on battery cycle count, this is genuinely competitive with the Neo. It is excluded here for the same reason as the Skydio 2+: the question asks what you can buy, and the used market is inconsistent enough that no source can verify a stable street price.
DIY FPV builds can put a flying quad in the air for under $200 in parts. They are not "buying a drone" in the sense a normal person means. Skip.
Gotchas before you spend
DJI in the US. DJI drones are still legal to import and use in the US as of August 2026, but the National Defense Authorization Act and the FCC covered-list actions have been circling DJI's ability to certify new radios for years. The 249 g threshold matters. Both the Neo (135 g) and the Mini 4K (249 g) sit under the FAA hobbyist registration line. The HoverAir X1 (125 g) does too. This is not just paperwork: sub-250 g drones face fewer restrictions in most jurisdictions worldwide, and if you plan to travel with the drone this is a large deal. Any drone above 250 g requires registration and, in some contexts, Remote ID broadcast hardware.
"Combo" pricing is where the sticker slides. The Neo's $139 to $149 street price is for the base package: one battery, no controller, phone-only control over the drone's own Wi-Fi. Realistic use wants at least two spare batteries (batteries are ~$50 each) and, for longer range or filming a moving subject, the RC-N3 controller. The Fly More Combo at $199 includes both. Budget $200 to $250 in practice, not $139.
The Neo has no obstacle avoidance. This is the one specification that separates it from the DJI Mini 4 Pro ($759) and the Skydio line. The Neo will happily fly into a tree while tracking you through it. If you are flying anywhere with trees, wires, or people, budget the extra $560 for a Mini 4 Pro or accept the risk.
"4K" on the Neo is electronic stabilization. The Neo uses EIS (electronic image stabilization), which crops the sensor. Real footage is closer to 2.7K after the crop. The 3-axis mechanical gimbal on the Mini 4K and the Mini 4 Pro is a meaningfully better image, which is why the Mini 4K exists as a $299 step-up in DJI's own lineup rather than being cannibalized by the Neo.
Chinese-brand data policy. The Neo, the Mini 4K, the HoverAir X1, and the Autel Nano+ all route setup and firmware updates through Chinese-owned apps. If you are flying for a US government contractor, none of them are on the Blue UAS approved list; the answer there is a Skydio or Parrot at 5 to 20 times the price, which is a different question. For a personal camera drone, this is the market.
